After waking up from sleep or during your daily life, you may suddenly notice a loss of hearing in one ear, and even dizziness and tinnitus symptoms. When you go to the hospital for a checkup, your doctor may tell you that you have idiopathic deafness and need to be hospitalized for hyperbaric oxygen and intravenous rehydration. You may ask, “How did I suddenly develop this condition? Let’s take a brief look at how the ear hears sound. When sound waves are collected through the auricle and enter the ear canal causing the eardrum to vibrate, the sound waves are conducted through the auditory tuberosity to the cochlea, where the mechanical energy is converted into bioelectricity and transmitted to the brain via the auditory nerve, at which point we hear sound. But when there is a problem with the cochlea and the nerve conduction pathway behind the cochlea that causes hearing loss, doctors usually say you have sensorineural deafness, but when hearing occurs within hours or days, we call it idiopathic deafness, also known as sudden deafness. The current speculation on the cause of the disease may be related to the possible poor blood supply to the inner ear, such as arterial spasm in the inner ear, vascular embolism, etc. Triggering factors may include hypertension, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, overwork, mental stress, insomnia, etc. In addition, viral infections can also cause it, such as mumps virus, but it can also develop without the above causes. The most important thing in treating this disease is the earlier the better, the best effect is within a few hours to a few days after the onset of the disease. 1 to 2 months later, the treatment effect is poor. In our clinical treatment, we found that young and middle-aged patients can partially or fully recover their hearing with early treatment, while older and delayed patients have poorer results. One of my classmates woke up in the morning and found that the hearing in one ear had disappeared. After early diagnosis and timely treatment with hyperbaric oxygen, the hearing was completely restored. So suffering from this disease is not terrible, as long as early treatment can be most or all of the hearing recovery. In addition, in daily life, especially the fast pace of life in the city, it is recommended not to work excessively, eat more vegetables, fruits and so on, eat less greasy fried food, older people should eat less salt, pay more attention to blood pressure, sleep enough at night to stay up as late as possible, so as to greatly reduce the triggering factors of the disease, to prevent the disease to visit us and improve our quality of life. In recent years, the number of patients with idiopathic deafness in our hospital has been on the rise, especially in young and middle-aged patients, which is worthy of our consideration.
