Sertraline is a selective 5-hydroxytryptamine reuptake inhibitor that can be used to treat symptoms associated with depression, including depression with anxiety, and can effectively reduce depressive irritability, making it one of the current drugs of choice for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. After satisfactory treatment, continued administration of sertraline can effectively prevent relapse and recurrence of depression. Sertraline is also used for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder. After satisfactory efficacy, continued administration of sertraline is effective in preventing the recurrence of initial symptoms of OCD.
