Thoracic spinal tuberculosis is primarily due to pulmonary tuberculosis, and the vast majority of people will be infected with tuberculosis multiple times during their lifetime, resulting in mild pulmonary tuberculosis. However, the vast majority of patients are asymptomatic, and only a very small number of patients develop more serious clinical symptoms. When tuberculosis is present in the lungs, the tuberculosis bacteria are particularly likely to remain in the thoracic spine because they enter the circulation and the blood flow in the capillaries in the thoracic spine is relatively slow. Once lodged, they will multiply and thus cause thoracic spine tuberculosis.
