What is multisystem atrophy

Multisystem atrophy is an adult-onset, sporadic neurodegenerative disorder that manifests clinically with varying degrees of autonomic dysfunction, Parkinson’s syndrome with poor response to levodopa-like drugs, cerebellar ataxia, and pyramidal fasciculations. The clinical manifestations vary because of the different sequences of involvement of these three systems at the onset of the disease. However, as the disease progresses, pathological and clinical manifestations of damage to all three systems eventually appear. Foreign epidemiological surveys show that the annual incidence of MSA in people over 50 years of age is about 3/100,000, but complete epidemiological data are not yet available in China. Indications for brain pacemaker surgery: 1, primary Parkinson’s disease. 2, Good effect of levodopa administration. 3.No severe psychiatric symptoms. 4, Duration of disease is more than 3 years. 5, Age not more than 75 years, the new diagnostic criteria can now be relaxed to 80 years.
