Parkinson’s patients may have difficulty swallowing if they reach an advanced stage, when problems such as choking on water can occur. Parkinson’s patients who choke on water can be given straws to drink water in small amounts if the symptoms are mild. You can also give a semi-liquid diet, such as thicker porridge, ravioli and noodles and other foods that are easy to swallow, or crushed medications if they are not contraindicated. If there is severe choking on water, nasal feeding of a liquid diet may be considered.
