What is infantile spasms?

Infantile spasms is a series of abnormal limb jerks or manifestations in infants due to neurological disorders in the brain, and is a specific type of epilepsy that is more harmful and requires prompt treatment. Infantile spasms most often occur in infants and children under one year of age. During a seizure, the infant will have a series of abnormal spasms of the limbs, such as arms reaching out to the chest, head and body bending to the front, and after recovery, the reaching and body bending symptoms will occur again, and one seizure can have as many as ten or more such movements repeatedly. Infantile spasms not only have an impact on the baby’s physical development, but also have varying degrees of intellectual impairment. Most infants with this disorder are mentally retarded, with delayed and impaired intellectual development. Prevention is better than cure for this condition. Genetic epilepsy, infant hypoxia, and febrile convulsions can cause the condition in otherwise normal infants. Medications such as hormonal drugs and anti-seizure medications and high amounts of vitamin B6 supplements are also available to treat the child. Infantile spasms have significant seizure symptoms and have a significant impact on the baby’s health and intelligence, and require better prevention and treatment.
