Pain over the left chest in women is based on age, underlying disease, risk factors and the nature of the pain, frequency of attacks, duration and accompanying symptoms before a specific determination can be made. The tissues and organs that may be involved in the upper left chest are breast, heart, lung, pleura, and rib cartilage. Breast: Mastitis and breast cancer in women may cause pain over the left breast. Mastitis mostly has red, swollen, hot and inflammatory manifestations. Breast cancer may have orange peel-like skin changes. Heart: More common is coronary artery disease. Episodic chest pain is characteristic of coronary artery disease. The typical pain site is behind the sternum. However, the pain may also radiate to the left chest. The nature of the pain is typically crush-like, mostly accompanied by significant chest tightness, and some patients have a sense of near death, often forcing the patient to stop activity immediately. The onset of symptoms mostly exists as triggers, such as going upstairs, rapid walking, exertion, full meal, cold, emotional excitement, etc. The symptoms may be relieved by quiet rest. Lung: More common are lung infection, spontaneous pneumothorax, pleurisy, and lung cancer. Spontaneous pneumothorax often has tearing-like pain at the beginning. Lung cancer is persistent and severe pain. Pain due to pulmonary causes is mostly aggravated by breathing or coughing. Others: costochondritis can cause chest pain with localized pressure but no redness; herpes zoster pain distributed along one side of the intercostal nerve with severe pain, and the pain does not exceed the midline of the body surface. Cardiac neurosis needs to be considered in those who fail to find organic pathology even after functional examination. Cardiac neurosis is most commonly seen in women between the ages of 20 and 40, especially during menopause. There is no pathological evidence of organic heart disease. Symptoms are varied, with typical very acute heart attack-like symptoms, including chest tightness, panic, breathlessness, and tightness in the precordial region. There are many causes of pain over the left side of the chest in women that require attention and prompt medical attention to rule out the possibility of fatal disease.
