A positive hepatitis E antibody test means that the patient’s immune system reacts to the hepatitis E virus infection by producing the appropriate immunoglobulin. Because there are many types of immunoglobulins produced by hepatitis E virus infection, of which are produced and remain in the body for a long period of time, the antibody test may still be positive even after the disease has been cured. If the test is IgM positive, it means that the person is currently infected with the hepatitis E virus. If it is IgG positive, it only means that there was once an infection with the hepatitis E virus, but it is not a current infection. In addition, if the hepatitis E antibody is found to be positive, further liver function tests are needed. If the liver function test is completely normal, with no elevation of transaminases or bilirubin, it means that there was hepatitis E infection in the past and the liver function has recovered now. If the hepatitis E antibody IgM is positive, it can be complicated by abnormal liver function and requires further treatment.
