What are Thyroid Stimulating Hormone Receptor Antibodies?

Thyrotropin receptor antibodies, also known as TRAb, are antibodies that act directly on the thyrotropin (TSH) receptor on the membranes of thyroid cells. Thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibodies are autoantibodies of the thyroid gland and are categorized into stimulatory and inhibitory antibodies, with stimulatory antibodies being the most common. Stimulatory antibodies can induce diffuse toxic goiter, in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, i.e., Graves’ disease, and thyrotropin receptor antibodies can help diagnose Graves’ disease as well as evaluate the condition. Thyrotropin receptor antibodies can help diagnose Graves’ disease and evaluate the condition. It is recommended to seek medical attention if abnormal thyrotropin receptor antibodies are present.
