In the process of treating herniated discs, I have found a problem in that many patients feel that the disease is cured when the symptoms are eliminated. But the point I am making today is different: symptom elimination is not exactly the same as a cure for herniated disc. The following is a brief description of a few cases I have come across. After each attack, the symptoms disappeared after treatment with epidural block, physiotherapy, traction, infusion of dehydrating and nerve-nourishing drugs and hormones, but the recurrent attacks were effective with conservative treatment again. However, when he came to me for treatment, the disease had already lasted for more than 10 years and conservative treatment was no longer effective. The time for minimally invasive surgery was lost, and the only option was open surgery. As a result, five patients chose open surgery, and one was no longer physically capable of surgery due to poor health condition. After surgery, two patients’ symptoms basically disappeared after a long time of recovery; another two patients’ symptoms were reduced, but pain and numbness in the lower extremities still existed; another patient’s numbness and pain symptoms were significantly aggravated, and later disappeared in our department by intra-vertebral O3 ablation + intervertebral orifice internal and external needle knife release. five patients all bore several tens of thousands of yuan of treatment costs. Analysis of the reasons: Conservative treatment can relieve symptoms is good, but the disappearance of symptoms is not the same as the disease has been cured, these are two concepts. Because, although the symptoms have disappeared, but the protruding disc still exists, the recurrence rate is high, and over time, the protrusion is easy to calcify, which is a major hidden problem of conservative treatment, time delayed, the loss of minimally invasive treatment time can only choose surgery, and increased the difficulty of surgery. But at the same time, some patients cannot bear the risk of surgery due to age factor, heart, lung and other organ function decreases, and the corresponding disease appears. My opinion: In the treatment of cervical and lumbar disc herniation, it is best to address the root of the problem, remove the triggering factors, and strive to completely eliminate the cause of the disease; palliative and conservative treatment cannot be relied on for long. The purpose of minimally invasive treatment was born based on this treatment goal. It avoids the major pitfalls of conservative treatment and goes to the root of the problem of the herniation without the many complications, high risks, and high costs of open surgery. I hope more patients with herniated discs can get out of this misunderstanding in choosing their treatment modality, choose their treatment plan correctly and reasonably, and get rid of the negative effects of lumbar disc herniation on their work and life as soon as possible.
