Can cottonseed oil cause infertility?

In the 1950s, some of China’s cotton-producing areas widely circulated this strange disease – “fever fever”, sick people often feel hot, like being burned, losing weight, weakness, and then people also found that many couples with the disease can not have children. What is more peculiar is that this land is like a curse, no matter local or foreign girls married to this land will have a great probability of suffering from this disease, infertility, and from the girls leave the local area, married outside most of them can get rid of this fate, pregnant with their own babies. This curse has been hanging over the locals, causing them great pain. Eventually, after many researches, the culprit of this disease – “cottonseed oil” finally came to light. It turns out that the local cotton production, cotton off the cotton seeds are also utilized by the local people, pressed into the cottonseed oil, almost occupied the local people’s edible oil market. However unrefined cottonseed oil contains Cotton Phenol. For men, even small doses of cotton phenol have a slight possibility of inhibiting male reproductive epithelial cells, leading to testicular atrophy, spermatogenic dysfunction, and possibly irreversible infertility with prolonged consumption. For women, cotton phenol will also have an adverse effect on ovarian function and endometrium, and may even induce amenorrhea. At the same time, cottonseed oil does have its unique advantages, cottonseed oil is a very good natural edible oil, contains a large number of unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E, has a good nutritional value, is a high-quality edible oil, of which the content of linoleic acid can be more than 50%, is the highest of all edible oils. Therefore, the refining of cottonseed oil has attracted the attention of many food engineers, and the current refining method of cottonseed oil has basically matured, and the content of cotton phenol in cottonseed oil that meets the national edible oil safety standard is extremely low, which is still very safe for human beings. However, long-term consumption of untreated cottonseed oil or cotton seed oil that does not meet the national safety standards for edible oil will indeed lead to infertility.
