Criteria for determining pathological jaundice

Diagnosis of pathologic jaundice can be determined by the delay in appearance, combined with bilirubin level, total bilirubin level, and duration of jaundice. 1. Jaundice occurs within 24 hours of birth in newborns with a total bilirubin level of more than 6mg/dl. 2. The total bilirubin level is more than 13mg/dl in term infants and more than 15mg/dl in preterm infants. 3. Serum levels of conjugated bilirubin greater than 1.5mg/dl. 4. Total bilirubin level rises more than 5mg/dl per day. 5. Jaundice lasts for a long time, more than 2~4 weeks, or the jaundice is progressively worsening or recurring after the jaundice subsides. If any of the above manifestations occurs, the clinician should be consulted and the medication should be administered according to the doctor’s instructions.
