What is the cause of the rib pain on the left side?

Rib pain on the left side is commonly associated with costochondritis, intercostal neuralgia, and some trauma can also cause rib pain. Intercostal neuralgia is more likely if the rib pain is confined and breathing or coughing causes paroxysmal stabbing pain. If pressure points can be clearly identified, it is possible to have costochondritis. If the pain is severe, an examination for exclusion rib fractures is needed, especially if there is a recent history of trauma, and fractures must not be ruled out, as they can cause severe pain that persists without relief. If a red blister or rash or papule appears locally after a few days of pain, it is likely to be herpes zoster. Once herpes appears, it is important to visit a dermatologist and treat with antiviral medication after diagnosis, not just pain relief.
