Stroke has become the “number one killer” of the Chinese population, with at least 7 million stroke patients in China and the prevalence of stroke is still on the rise. In China, one person has a stroke every 12 seconds, and one person dies of stroke every 21 seconds. With such a high incidence of stroke, how do we detect it? The FAST assessment method is used to detect some of the sudden signs and symptoms of stroke as early as possible and to seek medical attention once a stroke is detected. uF (Face): Can you (he/she) smile? Do you feel weakness or numbness on one side of the face? uA (Arm): Can you (he/she) lift both hands smoothly? Does it feel like one hand has no strength or cannot be lifted at all? uS (Speech): Can you (he/she) respond fluently? Does he/she have difficulty speaking or his/her speech is slurred? uT (Time): If any of the above three are present, please call the emergency number 120 immediately. Stroke is so terrible, can we prevent it? 80% of strokes can be prevented! Mainly by aggressive control of intervenable risk factors! Treatment of hypertension: Regular measurement, early detection of hypertension, active improvement of lifestyle and selection of medication according to individual conditions under the guidance of a doctor after finding elevated blood pressure. Healthy lifestyle and rational application of antihypertensive drugs, one without the other, combined with both, can effectively control hypertension. Control high blood pressure: Regular physical examination and early detection of high blood pressure. A multi-pronged approach to treating hyperlipidemia through healthy diet, scientific exercise, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol, maintaining a good state of mind and active medication can reduce the occurrence of stroke. Statin therapy is the “magic bullet” to control hyperlipidemia. What else can we do to reduce the risk of stroke? Change unhealthy lifestyles (smoking, alcohol abuse, staying up late), control weight, exercise, take medication for life if diabetes is diagnosed, and anticoagulation for patients with atrial fibrillation or valve replacement surgery. In summary, stroke prevention starts with managing blood pressure and blood lipids, controlling blood pressure and blood lipids to the appropriate target value according to risk stratification, and not forgetting both lifestyle intervention and medication, and adhering to medication for a long time, not reducing or stopping it on your own, so as to stay away from the danger of stroke.
