Pain behind the ear during recovery from facial paralysis is mainly caused by viral infection invading the facial nerve causing involvement of the geniculate ganglion or stapedius muscle branch later, and patients may have postauricular herpes and pain behind the ear. First, nerve-nourishing treatment can be given, such as vitamin B1, vitamin B12 or methylcobalamin orally, or vitamin B1 and vitamin B12 can be chosen for intramuscular injection. Second, anti-epileptic drugs such as gabapentin and pregabalin can be given orally for pain management. Patients can also undergo acupuncture and physical therapy to promote inflammation recovery, as well as functional exercises. Therefore, the pain behind the ear during the recovery period of facial palsy is mainly given to nerve nutrition and pain relief, and some patients can also undergo antiviral treatment.
