What does a nitric oxide value of 7 in exhaled breath indicate?

An exhaled breath nitric oxide value of 7 ppb is generally normal, but respiratory inflammation-related diseases, such as bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cannot be excluded.
When inflammation occurs in the human respiratory tract, the production of nitric oxide may increase, resulting in an elevated exhaled breath nitric oxide value, therefore an elevated exhaled breath nitric oxide value is informative for respiratory tract inflammation.
The normal range for exhaled nitric oxide is <20 ppb for those 12 years of age and younger, and <25 ppb for those 12 years of age and older. Although an exhaled nitric oxide value of 7 ppb is generally normal, it does not exclude an inflammatory response in the airways due to respiratory-related diseases, such as bronchial asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, and other diseases. In case of abnormal exhaled breath nitric oxide test results, it is recommended to consult a doctor to clarify the cause of the disease and to carry out targeted treatment or therapy.
