Surgical urinary catheters can be inserted either before or after anesthesia. In patients who are anesthetized for surgery, urinary function may be temporarily suppressed during recovery from anesthesia after surgery, and the patient’s bladder is not functioning autonomously to urinate. At this time a urinary catheter needs to be placed for intraoperative urination. It can be inserted before or after anesthesia. 1. Inserting a urinary catheter before anesthesia, the patient’s sensation will be more sensitive, and can cooperate with the various movements of inserting a urinary catheter, shortening the time of inserting a urinary catheter. And according to the patient’s reaction, we can know whether the catheter is smooth or not. 2. Inserting the catheter after anesthesia, as the anesthetic infiltrates along the nerves to the innervated area, the urethral sphincter is in a state of relaxation, and effectively blocks the pain sensation, which reduces the patient’s discomfort during the insertion of the urinary catheter. Catheterization can be performed either before or after anesthesia, and can be decided by the attending physician as appropriate, with attention to asepsis.
