Is an 8mm solid lung nodule considered serious?

8mm solid lung nodules are mostly caused by benign lung diseases and are mostly not serious; however, there is some risk of them being caused by lung cancer, which is more serious.
Lung nodules can be categorized into solid nodules, pure ground glass nodules and mixed ground glass nodules based on their composition. Solid nodules have a lower risk of malignancy than ground glass nodules, at about 7%. Lung nodules of 8mm in size have about 15% likelihood of being malignant.
Solid 8mm lung nodules are usually due to benign lung diseases such as pulmonary malformation, intrapulmonary lymph nodes, rheumatoid nodules, tuberculosis, etc. They can be improved or cured by regular follow up or by taking medications such as isoniazid, or by surgical resection. However, 8mm solid lung nodule has certain risk of bronchopulmonary cancer and other malignant tumors, which may be more serious and life-threatening if not treated in time. However, 8mm small lesions are mostly early stage lung cancer, and the prognosis of active treatment is better.
It is recommended to consult a specialist, according to the shape of the nodule, calcification, margins and other conditions, as well as tumor markers, inflammation indicators and other test results to comprehensively analyze the cause of the disease, and comply with the doctor’s instructions for further examination and treatment, and medication should be used under the guidance of a physician.
