Characteristics of Chinese medicine in the treatment of rheumatic polymyalgia

Rheumatic polymyalgia is a disease that manifests as pain and stiffness in the neck, scapula and pelvic girdle muscles, the etiology of which is unknown. The disease mostly occurs in middle-aged and elderly people over 50 years old, and the onset of the disease is usually triggered by cold. The main manifestations are pain and stiffness of the limb muscles, mostly symmetrical, which can involve the proximal tendon attachment points of the limbs, and in severe cases, the upper limb lifting activities are limited, and the lower limb lifting, squatting and standing up, and even walking can be difficult. The treatment of this disease with hormone therapy can quickly relieve the pain and control the disease, but the disadvantage is that the disease can easily recur during the process of hormone dose reduction. The characteristic of TCM treatment for this disease is to reduce the amount of hormones by supporting the righteousness and driving away the evil, and improving the body’s ability to resist disease. It can also regulate the side effects of hormone application to balance yin and yang to reduce the side effects of hormone and enhance the therapeutic effect of hormone. Finally, the purpose of discontinuing the use of hormones is to maintain the disease without relapse. Because of the long duration of the disease, even after early treatment, the treatment cannot be discontinued even after the symptoms improve or disappear and the blood sedimentation or C-reactive protein return to normal, and it usually takes 1 to 2 years or more to avoid relapse.
