If you are forty-five years old and can’t conceive a child, you can undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, at the age of forty-five, most of the patients have diminished ovarian function, so the success rate of IVF is lower. IVF is an in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer technique, in which eggs are removed from a woman’s ovaries, the eggs are combined with sperm outside the body, and the embryo sacs are transferred to the woman’s uterine cavity. 45 year old women can undergo IVF if they have normal eggs, normal thickness of the uterine lining, and do not have any serious medical problems (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.). Most 45-year-old women have diminished ovarian function, which results in low success rates of IVF, a high incidence of IVF complications (e.g., ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, etc.), and a higher incidence of gestational complications (e.g., gestational diabetes mellitus, gestational hypertension, etc.) after pregnancy, as well as a higher incidence of fetal malformations. If a woman of advanced age wants to undergo IVF, she should consult a specialist clinic in a regular hospital and decide after detailed consultation with a professional doctor, and formulate an individualized treatment plan.
