How to distinguish between hot and cold coughs

Many parents have a headache in buying cough remedies from pharmacies because the cough remedies sold in pharmacies often have hints of being used for wind-heat cough, phlegm-heat cough, phlegm-damp cough, etc. Many of them also state that they should be used with caution for wind-cold cough. Parents are not clear about the concepts of wind-heat cough, phlegm-heat cough and wind-cold cough, and many people think that their child’s cough must be wind-cold because of the cold weather in winter. Generally speaking, in the early stages of the disease, frequent coughing fits, itchy throat, heavy cough, white and thin sputum, stuffy nose, clear watery nose, fear of cold and little sweat, or fever and headache, and generalized aches and pains are indicative of a wind-cold cough. If the cough is unpleasant, with yellow and sticky sputum that cannot be easily excreted, thirst, sore throat, runny nose, or accompanied by fever and headache, bad wind, and slight sweating, it is a wind-heat cough. In the middle stage of the disease, phlegm-heat cough is characterized by coughing with thick yellow phlegm, unpleasant coughing and vomiting, or a hot fishy smell, or blood in the phlegm, red fever, red eyes and lips, restlessness, or even epistaxis, short red urine and dry stools. Phlegm-damp cough refers to a cough with white and thin phlegm, chest tightness and dullness, sleepiness, and a light red tongue with a white, greasy coating. Due to their physiological characteristics, children tend to exhibit wind-heat coughs and phlegm-heat coughs mostly, but rarely wind-cold coughs. Chinese patent medicines used for treating wind-cold cough in children include Xing Su Cough Syrup and Han Xia Dew; Chuan Bei Loquat Syrup, Antelope Cough Syrup, Snake Bile and Chuan Bei Liquid, Fresh Bamboo Liqueur, Acute Branch Syrup, Jin Zhen Oral Liquid and Xian Sheng Cough and Wheezing are used for wind-heat cough and phlegm-heat cough. Orange Red Phlegm Cough Liquid is for phlegm-damp cough. It is worth noting that since Fresh Bamboo Leach and Jin Zhen Oral Liquid have a laxative effect, they should not be taken by children with loose and unformed stools.
