Whether treatment is needed for a stool test result suggesting a weak positive occult blood test depends on what caused the weak positive result. If the weak positive result is due to contamination of the specimen or a test error, no treatment is needed. Women who are menstruating may have contamination of the stool specimen when it is retained and may also have a positive result. Eating animal blood or certain special foods may also result in a weakly positive stool test, which does not require treatment. If the patient has gastrointestinal bleeding and the fecal occult blood test is weakly positive, then active treatment is needed. Whether it is upper or lower gastrointestinal bleeding, it is recommended that the patient should cooperate with the doctor for a detailed examination and give regular treatment.
