After a swollen eye fall, it is important to first determine if there is any eye damage, such as observing the eye for redness and swelling, or if there is blurring of vision or even loss of vision. If eye injury is ruled out, it is usually a soft tissue contusion around the upper and lower eyelids, or near the orbit. First of all, cold compresses should be applied immediately in the early stages of injury, using ice or an ice-water mixture, preferably spaced with a layer of cotton, to avoid frostbite of the skin. After 24-48 hours of injury, the local swelling is completely stabilized and local heat can be applied. It is generally recommended to use hot towels, warm water bags or salt bags to promote local blood circulation and accelerate the decreasing of local swelling. Because of the proximity to the eyes it is generally not recommended to use bruising oil or volatile oils for external application, because volatile gases can irritate the eye, leading to dryness and pain in the eyes.
