What should patients pay attention to when they visit the TCM ophthalmology clinic? 1. Bring all the information Please bring all the outpatient medical records, discharge medical records, various examinations and medication prescriptions (including Chinese medicine prescriptions) of your local ophthalmology or our Western ophthalmology clinic for clinical reference of Chinese medicine diagnosis and treatment. Also to avoid duplication of examination and delay in diagnosis and treatment time. 2, TCM ophthalmology consultation focus During the consultation and treatment, there may be some eye examinations, including ophthalmic instrumentation, to clarify the diagnosis; most importantly, to conduct the unique Chinese medicine “look, smell, ask, cut” diagnosis and investigation. For me, the main focus is on the “inquiry” and “cutting” (pulse taking). I may ask if the patient is eating well. Are you thirsty? How do you sleep? How is the bowel movement? Do you sweat a lot? Is the body afraid of cold or heat? (How are your menstrual periods (for women) and so on, to determine the condition of the disease. Unlike Western medicine, which focuses on diagnosis, Chinese medicine pays more attention to the “symptoms” of your body and eyes. 3. Decoction of Chinese medicine and precautions for Chinese medicine The decoction method of Chinese medicine I prescribe is different from the conventional one, so I usually have to explain to the patient after each prescription, so please better bring your own pen and paper to record it clearly, or you can record it if you have conditions. Chinese medicine treatment should be adjusted frequently. Patients should come for regular review as required and should not take a prescription for a long time on their own to avoid side effects. 4, do not eat any tonic often asked me if I can eat some tonic, including the so-called eye protection chrysanthemum, wolfberry, cassia seeds, jujube, astragalus, cordyceps, American ginseng, deer antler, bear bile powder, etc., my request is not to eat all. Because these belong to the Chinese medicine, there are drug bias, not necessarily suitable for the condition, it is not good to eat the opposite! Likewise, do not take some proprietary Chinese medicine for eye care on your own, which may be more harmful. Patients should also inform me if they are taking Chinese or Western medicines for eye diseases or other systemic diseases at the same time. It is recommended not to take health products such as fish oil, protein powder or vitamins. People are not machines, so it is not a given that the more supplements you take, the better, and the more “pure” your body is when taking Chinese medicine, the better. During the period of taking Chinese medicine, try to eat a light and warm diet. 5. Regarding the reaction of taking Chinese medicine, please strictly follow the decoction method I mentioned. If there are obvious symptoms of discomfort after taking the herbs, such as diarrhea, vomiting, panic, fainting, or aggravation of the disease, you can stop taking the herbs and come to the clinic for prescription adjustment. Most of the people who seek treatment from TCM doctors are suffering from intractable or long-lasting eye diseases, and they often miss the best treatment period of TCM doctors, so the efficacy may not reach the patients’ expectation, but I will try my best, and I hope the patients should have a full understanding and appreciation of this. I will also be straightforward about some of the cases that I cannot cure. I would like to make it clear that the earlier the Chinese medicine and Chinese and Western medicine are combined to treat eye diseases, the better! Patients who have been seen for three times without success are advised to seek treatment from other TCM ophthalmologists, so that a change of mind may be more helpful.
