How to treat apnea suffocation during sleep

Sleeping apnea waking up may be related to obesity, tongue root fall, mandibular retraction and other diseases, according to the etiology and characteristics of the disease, choose the general treatment, surgical treatment, wearing oral orthodontic appliances and non-invasive positive pressure ventilation and other treatments.
1. Obesity: Obese patients can be bloated due to the submucosal tissues in the neck and pharyngeal cavity, squeezing the pharyngeal cavity leading to narrowing of the oropharyngeal airway, and the negative pressure of the airway generated by inhalation during sleep can easily trigger apnea and wake up. The disease can be treated by effectively reducing body weight and fat accumulation in the above areas, thus reducing the obstruction of the airway.
2. Tongue root falling back: some patients have hypertrophy of tongue body, when sleeping, the tongue root falls back against the back wall of pharynx, blocking the pharyngeal cavity, which causes apnea and waking up phenomenon. Oral orthodontic appliances can be worn to expand the volume of the pharyngeal cavity. If the conservative effect is not good, we can consider hyoid suspension and chin and tongue muscle anterior displacement surgery.
3. Mandibular retraction: some patients, due to acquired developmental deformities and congenital genetic factors, lead to mandibular retraction and narrow pharyngeal cavity, resulting in apnea and waking up due to occlusion of the pharyngeal wall and poor airflow during sleep. Non-invasive positive-pressure ventilation and jaw advancement surgery can be used to improve these conditions.
Apnea and waking up during sleep may be caused by a variety of pathologies, therefore, when the above situation occurs, we should actively consult a doctor for systematic examination, to clarify the condition, and follow the doctor’s instructions to standardize the treatment.
