What to do when a child coughs at night

A child’s cough at night can be caused by improper lying down. Lying down can aggravate the cough because it can cause poor breathing in the lungs or bronchi, so parents can put the child’s pillow higher to keep the child in a semi-recumbent position to facilitate the discharge of phlegm. In between coughs, let the child change to a side-lying position or pick him/her up and lie on his/her side, turn him/her over every 1-2 hours, and promptly pat his/her back to smooth the air and massage the back to help clear it. Parents should pay attention to pulling the windows at night to avoid the cold air from attacking the child and causing a cough. You can massage the Fengchi points (the back of the neck, one inch up from the hairline, one on each side, with a small sour depression) for about 2 minutes each time, 3-4 times a day. If the symptoms do not improve for a long time, it is recommended to seek medical attention to identify the cause of the cough and prescribe the right medicine. Coughs in children are mostly common due to upper respiratory tract infections, pharyngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, allergic rhinitis, and foreign bodies in the trachea. If the cough is allergic, nebulization can be performed; if it is a mycoplasma infection, azithromycin can be administered; if the cough is caused by a foreign body in the trachea, bronchoscopy should be performed to clarify the diagnosis and remove the foreign body.
