How long do you have to be in pain after open heart surgery

Pain may be present for 1 to 3 months after open heart surgery, and in some patients the pain may extend to more than 6 months.
Open heart surgery is a major surgery which is more traumatic and patients usually experience more severe pain within 1 week after surgery. The pain usually decreases gradually as the incision heals, usually 1 month after surgery.
If the ribs or sternum are cut when the chest is opened, the pain will usually be prolonged and may last for 3 months, and even some patients with median open heart may be left with long-term chronic pain lasting for 6 to 12 months.
After open heart surgery, patients should take proper rest, avoid violent coughing, increase diet and nutrition, follow the doctor’s instructions for functional exercise, and gradually can recover. After open heart surgery, patients should closely observe their own situation and inform the doctor in time if they find any abnormality, so as to avoid any adverse consequences.
