Dear Director Geng, Professor Chu, Director Zhang Liling, distinguished leaders, experts and colleagues: Good day to you all! On a hot summer day, a cool breeze is blowing in the auditorium of Children’s Hospital, where a group of enthusiastic people are gathered. The fourth annual meeting of the Shaanxi Health Care Association Youth Vision Care and Optometry Professional Committee and Western Optometry Forum was held. First of all, on behalf of the organizers of this conference, I would like to extend a warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to all of you for coming! Thank you to Director Geng and all the leaders for their great support. Thank you to the leaders and staff of Xi’an Children’s Hospital and Beilin District Disabled Persons’ Federation for providing good conditions for this conference! Thank you to all the sponsors who have contributed to this conference! Thank you very much! Xu Yuan, Ophthalmology Department, is about to start the academic conference. Before that, please allow me to briefly introduce the preparation of this conference and the lecture experts. Professor Chu Renyuan is our predecessor in optometry, the top optometrist. At the Shanghai meeting, I listened to Prof. Chu’s lecture, which was very profitable. Unfortunately, only 4 of us from Xi’an were present at the meeting. Inviting Prof. Chu to Xi’an became the main content of this event. After many efforts, as expected. Here again, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Professor Chu for coming! You have worked hard! Professor Zheng Yuan Yuan works in Beijing Tongren Hospital Ophthalmology, a famous low vision specialist. He is a member of the National Disability Federation’s Low Vision Rehabilitation Leading Group. Another topic of this meeting is to announce the establishment of the Low Vision Rehabilitation Leadership Group of the Disabled Persons’ Federation in Beilin District, Shaanxi Province. We hope to raise the low vision rehabilitation work in our province to a new level under the guidance of Professor Zheng. We will contribute to the prevention, control and rehabilitation assistance for low vision patients. On behalf of the low vision patients in our province and even in the western region, I would like to thank Prof. Zheng. President Wei Ruihua, Prof. Yang Mindy and Prof. Li Zhigang are all experts working in the front line of optometry and also have different study and working experiences abroad. It is most rare to invite them not only to talk about theoretical advances but also to introduce some experiences that they have been used to abroad. The province’s own lecture experts are Director Zhang Liling, Professor Xing Yongxin and me. We hope to be of help to everyone. The annual meeting and this forum are the focus of our work. In addition to this, there are some other things worth reporting to you. The first is the training of professionals and the popularization of professional knowledge. Over the past year, the professional committee has been invited to give more than 10 lectures and professional trainings in various hospitals and vision care institutions in and outside the province. A number of excellent talents have been trained in amblyopia treatment, binocular vision, stereopsis establishment, myopia prevention and control, etc. In this conference, there were people from all over the country who wanted to gain more knowledge about optometry. Secondly, the establishment of student optometric files and the promotion of sunshine bright eye exercise. Pilot schools were established in Jiaoda Sunshine Primary School, Sunshine Middle School, Xi’an Yuhang Primary School and Xiaoyanta Primary School. Regular checkups were conducted to establish optometric files and observe students’ refractive error changes. Screen out patients with large changes in visual acuity, focus on examinations, and guide myopia control. Promote the Sunshine Bright Eyes Exercise, and strive to make a large sample comparison with the refractive status of neighboring schools to further promote this useful method. Third, we will organize scientific propaganda, cooperate with the activities of the health care association, regularly go to schools and communities, or invite patients into the big classroom of eye care. The scientific knowledge of myopia prevention and control, low vision prevention and control, rehabilitation and eye care is taught to more people. In the past year, nearly 1,000 people have received scientific lectures organized by health care associations and professional committees. Fourth, more than 80,000 students were screened for low vision, problems were identified, and prevention programs were proposed early. Free low vision aids were distributed to more than 2,000 registered low vision patients in Beilin District. Under the leadership of the Beilin District Disabled Persons’ Federation, the Beilin District Low Vision Rehabilitation Leadership Group has been established. It is hoped that this activity will be rolled out in the province and in the west. January to June 2004, the “Little Guardians of Eye Care Essay Contest” for primary and secondary school students in Xi’an was initiated and sponsored with the aim of raising awareness of eye care among parents of students. More than 8,000 valid submissions were received, and more than 20 first, second and third prizes were awarded. It has attracted great attention and good effect from the society. It was reported by Shaanxi TV. Over the past year, we have done some work under the leadership of the Health Care Association and with the efforts of all colleagues. It has played a role in promoting youth vision care in Shaanxi Province. However, there is still a gap between our province’s optometric industry and that of developed regions, and we hope to reduce the gap through our unremitting efforts. For the sake of children’s visual health, we hope to make greater contributions. Thank you all! By the way, I would like to tell you that next year’s 5th Annual Conference and Western Optometry Forum will be hosted by the Weinan II Hospital. See you next year in Weinan! Xu Yuan, Director of the Shaanxi Health Care Association Youth Vision Care and Optometry Professional Committee
