Symptoms and treatment of otitis media in young children

Because of their young age, young children are susceptible to bacterial infections that can cause otitis media. When a toddler has otitis media, there are many symptoms that make it important for parents to take a timely treatment plan. Often, children with otitis media will scratch their ears because of the throbbing, stinging sensation, and the ear pain will worsen when the child swallows, coughs, or sucks. Children may also become irritable, cry, shake their heads, rub their ears with their hands, and have restless sleep at night. Children with severe otitis media may experience fever, ear discharge, hearing impairment, and headache. Otitis media can be very harmful to young children, damaging their hearing and causing temporary loss of hearing in severe cases, and otitis media can easily recur. Medication is recommended for otitis media. Usually an aqueous solution of antibiotics or a mixture of antibiotics and steroid hormones is used. It is important to take the medication according to the doctor’s instructions, because some antibiotics can aggravate the condition if they do not work as symptomatic treatment. Young children with otitis media are also advised to take anti-inflammatory medications such as Huanglian Shangqing tablets. Young children with otitis media should be treated and also take better care of their lives by paying attention to oral hygiene, keeping their mouths clean, strengthening their health and preventing colds, which can easily lead to otitis media attacks in young children.
