High ligation of hernia is a common surgical procedure used to treat inguinal hernias, usually in children. It involves stripping the hernia sac, then ligating the hernia sac at the neck of the hernia, and then cutting off the excess hernia sac, which can be repaired without any other repairs. This type of surgery is less invasive and recovery is relatively quick, and can be cured as the child’s body develops and the abdominal muscles strengthen. However, hernias in adults are not suitable for high ligation surgery and will tend to recur. Surgery for adults is usually laparoscopic hernia repair, which has a wider scope of repair, lower recurrence rate and less pain for the patient, or traditional tension-free hernia repair is also an option. For patients who are not candidates for traditional or laparoscopic surgery, high hernia sac ligation may be performed.
