This herb is effective in drying dampness and resolving phlegm (expelling dampness by drying dampness and resolving phlegm), regulating qi and eliminating food, and is mainly used in cases of rheumatism, coughing and asthma with excessive phlegm, food stagnation (accumulation of poorly-digested food in the stomach) that does not dissolve, vomiting and hiccups, and distension and pain in the epigastrium (abdomen).
It should be noted that it should be contraindicated in cases of Qi deficiency, Yin deficiency and dry cough with little phlegm.
