The normal width of the pubic symphysis is about 4 to 5 mm, although it can widen by two to three mm when a woman delivers a fetus late in pregnancy, and normally not more than 10 mm. The pubic symphysis has a very important physiological role for women, especially in the delivery of a fetus. However, during pregnancy or childbirth, it may cause arthritis of the pubic symphysis, which is a kind of sterile inflammation, usually caused by blood circulation disorder. The width of the pubic symphysis is greater than ten millimeters, which can be diagnosed as separation of the pubic symphysis, and the factors that cause separation of the pubic symphysis include physiological separation caused by delivery of fetus, pathological separation caused by pelvic fracture, and other factors, and may also be caused by congenital developmental abnormalities. If the auxiliary examination reveals the separation of the pubic symphysis, or if there are uncomfortable symptoms, it is recommended to go to the regular hospital for examination and treatment as soon as possible.
