How long to take a course of allopurinol

Allopurinol, as a drug to lower uric acid, does not have a duration of treatment and, like other antihypertensive drugs and hypoglycemic drugs, needs to be taken for a long time. During the course of taking allopurinol, patients need to have their blood uric acid levels monitored regularly at the hospital and the medication should be adjusted according to the blood uric acid levels. At first, allopurinol should be taken in small doses, usually one tablet once a day, and then gradually increase the dose according to the level of uric acid, up to three tablets once a day. When the uric acid level is below the target value, the allopurinol dosage can be gradually reduced to the minimum maintenance level of 1 tablet once a day.
