Diazepam, commonly known as Valium, is administered by oral, injectable and intravenous routes, with oral administration being effective. Diazepam is used for sedation 3 times a day, 1-2 capsules a time; for hypnosis, 1-2 capsules a time at bedtime. Alcohol-dependent patients are given 10mg for the first dose and the dose is halved for the second dose, but the total controlled dose is not more than 40-50mg a day to avoid causing major adverse reactions. In addition, diazepam is also used as an anti-anxiety and anti-epileptic, and is effective for persistent seizures, petit mal seizures, and grand mal seizures.
