What does the test for cognitive impairment involve?

The diagnosis of cognitive impairment relies on neuropsychological assessment, neurological physical examination, blood biochemistry and other tests, and imaging tests. The neuropsychological assessment will assess the patient’s cognitive, life, emotional and mental status through a conversation between the patient and the doctor and a questionnaire. A neurological physical examination will also be carried out including higher cortical functions, cranial nerves, motor system, sensory system and balance functions. Blood and biochemical investigations include routine blood and urine tests, blood biochemistry, thyroid function, vitamin B12 and other routine tests. Imaging tests include cranial CT, MRI, PET, etc. to determine the presence of organic pathology causing cognitive impairment.
