Treatment of the sciatic nerve involves identifying the cause of the sciatic nerve symptoms. If the sciatic nerve is inflamed, usually secondary to a systemic or other infection, the inflammation of the sciatic nerve will be controlled by treating the systemic or other infection. If the sciatic nerve symptoms are secondary to a herniated disc or lumbar spinal stenosis, surgery to remove the herniated disc or to treat lumbar spinal stenosis will relieve the sciatic nerve symptoms. Other conditions, such as pectus excavatum syndrome or ankylosing spondylitis, can also cause sciatic nerve symptoms, and the primary condition should be treated first. Once the primary condition is treated, the sciatic nerve symptoms will disappear.
