If a patient awakens from craniotomy, it is generally safer to leave the intensive care unit after at least a week, because within a week is the best time for complications to occur after craniotomy, such as common rebleeding, cerebral edema, acute hydrocephalus, and intracranial infection. If relevant intracranial complications occur, it is likely to lead to further impairment of consciousness and in severe cases, brain herniation may occur and endanger the patient’s life. However, for certain patients, such as bilateral frontal lobe brain contusions and other parts of the brain injury, it is recommended to stay in the care unit for at least about two weeks for safety reasons. This is because in some patients, the duration of cerebral edema may last for more than two weeks, that is, within two weeks, the condition may also undergo a very serious change in condition.
