Patients with retinal detachment experience a dramatic loss of vision, at which point they require surgery, and among ophthalmic surgeries, retinal detachment surgery is considered major surgery. Ophthalmic surgery can be divided into several levels – one, two, three and four – with the higher the level, the more difficult the surgery. Retinal detachment belongs to the fourth level of surgery, which is a relatively difficult surgery. However, the size of the surgery level is not judged by time. For example, cataract surgery can be done in ten minutes, but cataract is not a minor surgery. Ophthalmic surgery is more delicate, usually tiny incisions are basically about 3 mm in length and need to be done under a microscope, so it requires a higher level of skill and difficulty for the surgeon. In ophthalmic surgery, retinal detachment surgery is mainly vitrectomy and reset of retinal detachment, which has a high difficulty factor and therefore belongs to major surgery. Retinal detachment surgery is a class IV surgery, so patients are advised to choose a larger public hospital or a professional eye hospital for the surgery, and not to go to a private clinic for treatment to avoid delaying the condition.
