There are various surgical procedures for retinal detachment. Air travel is not affected for those who have not undergone intraocular long-acting gas injection with extra-scleral pressure padding (including ring ligation). For vitreous surgery injected with long-acting gas, early airplane rides or travel to high altitudes can cause eye discomfort due to the expansion of the gas causing an increase in intraocular pressure. Therefore, it is necessary to wait until the gas is absorbed or less, and silicone oil injection is not affected. For retinal detachment, supine position is forbidden until the gas is completely absorbed; for silicone oil injected patients, prone position is generally sufficient for three months after surgery, and silicone oil is not supine as much as possible before removal, especially for patients with crystalline eyes to avoid cataract.
