Care after total colectomy

After total colectomy, the patient needs to have an abdominal drainage tube, so the patient is advised to adopt a semi-recumbent position to facilitate the drainage of fluid and to observe the change in the nature and amount of drainage fluid. In addition, after the recovery of anesthesia, the patient should be assisted to leave the bed early to promote the early recovery of intestinal motility and the recovery of the disease. Regular massage of both lower extremities should be performed during bed rest, as prolonged bed rest can easily lead to the formation of deep vein thrombosis in the lower extremities. After the surgery, the patient should be treated routinely with intravenous anti-infection therapy. After the intestinal motility is restored, the patient can be allowed to eat a full liquid diet by mouth, and should be encouraged to eat more high-protein foods and vitamin-rich foods, but not to overeat.
