When you have just had your ears pierced, there may be congestion, redness, swelling and slight pain around the ear piercing, which are normal. If there is no secondary infection, it can usually subside gradually, so care should be taken to avoid infection after piercing. Patients should disinfect the area around the ear piercing, including the studs, with iodophor every morning and evening, and apply topical erythromycin eye ointment if necessary. Most importantly, the ear piercing must not get wet and must not get infected. When washing hair or bathing, care must be taken not to contaminate the ear piercing, and patients should not change the earring studs too often to avoid stimulating the ear piercing and aggravating the infection. If the redness and pain around the ear piercing does not improve, but worsens instead, and even a discharge appears, it may be secondary to infection and needs to go to the hospital in time to be treated by a doctor.
