Used together, Huang Jing and He Shou Wu have the effect of nourishing the lungs and kidneys, benefiting the essence and tonifying the blood. Huang Jing has the effect of tonifying qi and nourishing yin, strengthening the spleen, moistening the lungs and benefiting the kidneys. It is useful for dry cough with little phlegm due to deficiency of yin in the lungs and kidneys, long term chronic cough, and for internal heat and thirst due to weakness of the spleen and stomach and insufficiency of the kidneys’ essence (internal fever accompanied by symptoms such as overeating, excessive drinking, excessive urination, etc.). It is not recommended for people with cold diarrhea and phlegm-dampness (stomach distension and discomfort) and stagnation of qi. Adverse effects are not known. Prepared He Shou Wu has the effect of tonifying the liver and kidney, benefiting the essence and blood, darkening the beard and hair, and strengthening the tendons and bones. It is used in treating blood deficiency and yellowish color, dizziness and tinnitus, premature whitening of hair, lumbar and knee soreness, numbness of limbs, leakage of menstruation (excessive menstruation or more than a few drops), subluxation of the belt, prolonged malarial deficiency; high blood fat. It is not recommended for those with clear stools and those with dampness and phlegm. Adverse effects are not clear. The combination of Huang Jing and Prepared He Shou Wu can nourish the yin essence of the lungs and kidneys, and is useful for deficiency of the lungs and kidneys, essence and blood.
