Some reports have confirmed that more than 80% of asthmatic children have allergic reactions to dust mites. Dust mite allergy can cause allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, eczema, and dermatitis in mild cases; in severe cases, it can cause nocturnal cough, severe asthma, and even recurrent episodes of laryngeal edema. Data indicate that when indoor dust contains 100 dust mites per gram can cause allergies, and more than 500 have a high risk of sensitization. Dust mites are widely distributed and mostly live on their own. House dust mites mainly breed in the bedroom pillows, bedding, upholstery and furniture. Dust mites also breed in large numbers on the floors of flour mills, cotton mills, food warehouses, and Chinese medicine warehouses. Dust mite is a rodent feeding autochthonous mite that feeds on powdery substances such as animal dander, flour, cotton seed cake and fungi. Patients with allergic rhinitis and asthma in the family should pay more attention to the need for mite prevention. Today, I introduced eight methods of home dust mite control. 1. Reduce indoor relative humidity Keeping relative humidity below 50% is the most common way to control mites and their allergen levels, as the surrounding relative humidity is the most critical factor affecting mite prevalence. Recent studies have shown that reducing relative humidity indoors using high performance dehumidifiers and air conditioners is a practical and effective method of mite removal. 2. Use packing sets Packing mattresses and pillows with special mite resistant materials is an effective way to reduce exposure to dust mites and their allergens. For allergy sufferers, this method is recommended. The packing material consists of plastic, breathable materials, very fine fabric fibers or non-fabric synthetic materials. 3, bedding is often cleaned Bedding needs to be frequently dried and cleaned, and the temperature of the water should be above 55°C to be enough to kill the mites. 4, fabric sofas, rag dolls, etc. If there are similar patients at home, it is not recommended to have items like rag dolls at home that are prone to accumulate mites. In addition, curtains, fabric sofas and so on are to focus on sucking mites and cleaning. 5, carpet vacuuming If the family is unwilling or financially not allowed to replace the carpet, it should be vacuumed once a week and the vacuum cleaner bag should be replaced frequently. The vacuum cleaner bag should be double-layered or a high-performance air filter or central vacuum cleaner with the end leading to the outdoors to avoid the formation of an aerosol of allergens during the vacuuming process. 6. Freezing soft toys and small items After freezing soft toys and small items (such as pillows and special clothing) for 24 hours at -17°C to -20°C, these items can be washed to remove dead mites and allergens. 7, chemical agents The key issue in the indoor use of chemical agents is the safety of the agent, the form of the active ingredient in the agent in the efficiency product. The product must be able to deliver its active ingredients directly to where the mites live. 8. Dust mite control is part of the overall treatment of allergic diseases Patients with perennial allergic rhinitis, asthma or atopic dermatitis who are allergic to mites and whose condition cannot be controlled by simple general treatment or inhalation therapy should be recommended for treatment of mite allergen control. The recommended approach should be based on the extent of the patient’s disease, the climatic conditions where the patient lives, and the individual’s living environment. In addition, all patients’ mattresses and pillows should be jacketed and changed to bedding that can be washed in hot water; bedrooms should be adjusted to reduce the space for mite growth and allergen build-up. Control humidity as a medium to long-term goal. In addition, if the patient is preparing to move, the patient should be advised to take simple and effective control methods for mites and other allergens in the new home.
