Principles of dementia treatment: 1. Primary prevention by identifying and controlling risk factors (described in the section on risk factors for cognitive impairment and dementia); 2. Secondary prevention through targeted treatment or symptomatic treatment according to the cause; 3. Tertiary prevention by delaying the disease as much as possible if it cannot be cured. Treatment of dementia: 1. Targeted treatment should be given according to the cause of dementia, such as folic acid and VB12 supplementation for dementia caused by folic acid and vitamin B12 deficiency; hormone replacement therapy for dementia caused by hypothyroidism; and active treatment of stroke for dementia caused by stroke. 2. Symptomatic treatment Symptomatic treatment of dementia includes Chinese medicine and Western medicine methods. At present, there are more clinical applications: cholinesterase inhibitors (staphylococcinolone acetonide, donepezil, carbaplatin), excitatory amino acid receptor antagonists (memantine), brain energy metabolism activators (piracetam, aniracetam, oracetam), ergot alkaloids (dihydroergot alkaloids, ergot bromelain), calcium ion antagonists (nimodipine), ginkgo biloba extract, etc. Attention should be paid to the type of dementia according to selection, paying attention to the side effects of the drugs.
