Acupuncture for frozen shoulder

Frozen shoulder, known as periarthritis of the shoulder joint, develops at the age of 40 or older, with a slightly higher incidence in women than in men, and is more common in manual laborers. Since people around the age of 50 are prone to this disease, it is also known as the 50th shoulder. Frozen shoulder is a common disease that occurs when the pain in the shoulder joint is dominated by paroxysmal pain, followed by movement disorders. It is a common disease. Patients with frozen shoulder feel cold air entering the shoulder, and some patients feel cool air coming out from the inside of the shoulder joint, so it is also called “shoulder wind”. The lesion is characterized by widespread pain, functional limitation and pressure pain. Symptoms and signs The disease is more common in women than in men, and the left side is more common than the right side, or both sides may develop one after another. The disease is more common in middle-aged and elderly people. The pain gradually appears in one part of the shoulder and is clearly related to movement and posture. As the disease prolongs, the pain expands and involves the middle part of the upper arm, and is accompanied by limited movement of the shoulder joint. If you want to increase the range of motion, severe sharp pain will occur. In severe cases, the affected limb cannot comb the hair, wash the face or buckle the belt. The patient may wake up at night with pain due to turning and moving the shoulder. In the early stages, the patient can still point out the painful spot, but in the later stages, the pain widens and is felt to come from the humerus. Onset characteristics The onset of frozen shoulder is more common in patients with left shoulder and less common in patients with bilateral onset. 1. The acute phase, the acute attack usually belongs to the early stage, with continuous spontaneous pain symptoms, most patients have chronic pain, but there are also acute attacks, and some patients just feel discomfort and constriction in the shoulder. If the shoulder pain is not treated in time, it will rapidly worsen, with muscle spasm and painful symptoms, especially at night, when the pain worsens and cannot be turned over, affecting sleep. 2. In the chronic phase, the painful symptoms of frozen shoulder will slowly disappear. However, the contracture and stiffness symptoms of the shoulder joint slowly come to the fore, and the activity is limited or even impossible. Etiology Shoulder causes ① Most of the disease occurs in middle-aged and elderly people over 40 years old, soft tissue degeneration and weakened ability to withstand various external forces are the basic factors; ② Chronic injury caused by long-term over-activity and poor posture is the main cause ③ The shoulder is fixed for too long after upper limb trauma, and the periapical tissues atrophy and adhesions occur secondary. (4) Improper treatment after acute contusion or strain of the shoulder. According to Chinese medicine, the lesions of this disease are located in the meridians and tendons of the shoulder. In people who are in their fifties, there is a deficiency of vital energy and a gradual deficiency of Ying and Wei, if they feel local wind and cold, or if they are tired of sleeping on their side, or if they are used to sleeping on their side, the tendons receive long-term compression, resulting in a blockage of Qi and blood and shoulder paralysis. If the shoulder pain lasts for a long time, the local qi and blood do not run smoothly and the qi stagnates and blood stasis, resulting in swelling and adhesion of the affected area, and eventually the joint becomes stiff and the affected area cannot be moved. Treatment Treatment: Relax the meridians and channels, move the Qi and blood, and use acupuncture and moxibustion. Prescription: Local acupuncture points around the shoulder joint, together with the A-Yi point, can dispel wind and cold, soothe the meridians and open the channels, together with distal acupuncture points, can relax and activate the meridians, open the channels and relieve pain. The combination of distal and proximal acupuncture points can help to dispel the evil, unblock the meridians, harmonize the qi and blood, and stop the pain.
