A herniated disc in lumbar 4/5 has to be understood from an anatomical point of view. The first thing to understand is what is a herniated disc. There is a fibrocartilage ring between the vertebral body and the vertebral body, and there is a nucleus pulposus inside the cartilage ring. After trauma or chronic injury, the fibrocartilage ring ruptures, and after the rupture, the nucleus pulposus protrudes outward under pressure, compressing the dural sac or the surrounding nerve roots and causing a series of neurological symptoms, which is called a herniated disc. There are five lumbar intervertebral discs, and lumbar 4/5 is only one of the lumbar intervertebral discs, which is called lumbar 4/5 disc herniation.
