Sheng Di, or raw Dihuang, has the effects of clearing heat and cooling blood (relieving blood heat by clearing heat) and nourishing yin and promoting the production of body fluid; and Ru Di, or ripened Dihuang, has the effects of tonifying blood and nourishing yin and filling in the marrow (replenishing the essence of essence and promoting bone marrow development). Raw Di Huang is sweet, bitter and cold in nature. It belongs to the heart, liver and kidney meridians. It is mainly used in treating fever with tongue-redness and thirst, internal heat due to yin deficiency, bone vapor and labor heat, internal heat and thirst (internal heat accompanied by symptoms such as excessive eating, drinking and urination), vomiting of blood, epistaxis, and spotting and rash. It is not suitable for people with spleen deficiency, dampness and stagnation, or yang deficiency and diarrhea. Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata (熟地黄), sweet in flavor and slightly warm in nature. It belongs to the liver and kidney meridians. It is mainly used in treating blood deficiency with yellowish color, palpitation (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), palpitation (violent heartbeat, panic), irregular menstruation, metrorrhagia (excessive menstruation or dripping of menstruation) and hematemesis, etc. It is also used in treating blood loss and epistaxis. It is not recommended for people with weak spleen and stomach, stagnant qi and phlegm, fullness of abdomen and loose stools.
