Are intraductal papillomas of the breast benign or malignant?

Simple intraductal papilloma is a benign tumour and is commonly found in women with benign breast lesions. However, it is sometimes associated with atypical hyperplasia of the ductal epithelium, ductal carcinoma in situ or invasive carcinoma and is therefore regarded as a precancerous lesion. The disease itself is also at risk of malignancy, with a malignancy rate of 6% to 8%.
