The treatment of umbilical hernia should be conservative or surgical, taking into account the patient’s age as well as physical condition.
1. Conservative treatment: for children under 2 years of age. Umbilical hernia occurs in this group, mainly because of the imperfect development of the abdominal wall tissue in the navel area, with age, there is a possibility of self-healing. Therefore, parents are instructed to wear hernia belts for children under 2 years of age to prevent the abdominal tissue from protruding, slow down the development of the lesion, and promote self-healing of the lesion.
2. Surgery: Surgery should be considered for children over 2 years of age and for adult patients. After diagnosis, the earlier the surgery, the better the surgical effect, the lower the chance of postoperative complications and recurrence. Mainly includes traditional hernia repair, open tension-free hernia repair and laparoscopic minimally invasive hernia repair.
