What are the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease?

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a kind of disease caused by gastroduodenal contents backflow into the esophagus causing uncomfortable symptoms and complications, there are esophageal symptoms and non-esophageal symptoms. 1. Esophageal symptoms: Typical symptoms include reflux and heartburn, i.e., burning sensation when gastroduodenal contents gush into the pharynx or mouth and the back of the sternum or subxiphoid process, which often occurs one hour after meals, and can be aggravated by lying down or bending over. Atypical symptoms include chest pain, caused by reflux irritation of the esophagus, dysphagia or retrosternal foreign body sensation, caused by esophageal spasm or dysfunction. 2. Extra-esophageal symptoms: caused by reflux stimulation or damage to tissues or organs outside the esophagus, such as pharyngitis, chronic cough, asthma, dental erosion, etc. Some patients experience pharyngeal discomfort with a sense of foreign body sensation or blockage, but no dysphagia, which is also known as hysterical ballooning. 3. Complications: esophageal mucosal erosion and ulceration leading to vomiting of blood and black stools, esophagitis repeated episodes of fibrous tissue proliferation leading to esophageal stenosis and so on. It is recommended that patients with GERD go to regular hospitals in time to improve the relevant examinations and standardize the treatment under the doctor’s guidance, so as to avoid delaying the condition or causing adverse reactions.
